Westmeath Community Development’s Care/Repair project which makes a significant difference to Older People in Westmeath saw an increase in demand in 2013, with Care & Repair Jobs up by 70% and the introduction of the new Home Visit Service which was rolled out in the Athlone area.
WCD, in conjunction with Cairdeas, who are a group of agencies in the Athlone Area working with Older People, rolled out the Home Visit Service as a Pilot Scheme in Athlone Town in the second quarter of 2013. Following on the success of this scheme in Athlone in 2013, we hope to develop a similar service in Mullingar this year.
During 2013, 95 Older People in Westmeath have availed of the Care & Repair service, with almost 450 jobs completed including Gardening, Home Repairs and Home Visits, with gardening being the most common request. The Home Visit service commenced in April and almost 100 visits have been completed by the end of 2013.
As part of Care and Repair, we offer a Trusted Trades Referrals service, and 25 Older Persons availed of this in 2013.
We increased our volunteers with Care and Repair by 30 in 2013.
Westmeath Care and Repair Project is part funded by the Local and Community Development Programme through POBAL and the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. It is operated nationally by Age Action and It forms part of the Westmeath Age Friendly Programme of Westmeath County Council.
