Due to success of the programme in Mullingar which began in February 2008, the programme has now expanded to the following areas: Kinnegad, Killucan, Rochfortbridge, Kilbeggan, Tyrellspass, Delvin and Castlepollard.
There are now 15 trained Community Mothers supporting families throughout Westmeath. Requests for Community Mothers are predominately from Public Health Nurses but in recent months there are a growing number of self-referrals especially from the ‘new Irish’ Communities.
In 2008 the programme supported over twenty families it is hoped that by the end of 2009 Community mothers will be supporting over 40 families. The success of the programme is because we use volunteer mothers from local communities who use their experience as parents to support and encourage parents to become ultimately active members of their local communities.
