On Friday 13th August a group of 20 participants completed a 10 Month FETAC Level 5 FAS Horticulture Programme in Belvedere House and Gardens  sponsored by Westmeath Community Development.

This program has been a huge success and on completion of this course, out of 20 participants, 3 have full time employment, 1 has progressed to a Feta Level 6 in the Botanic Gardens and 3 have enrolled on a Start Your Own Business Course and the rest are actively looking for work with on going support.

This is a hands on practical programme containing 8 FETAC modules such as plant identification, plant science  and landscape Construction and Maintenence. This programme started last November and has been a successful educational programme which is based in Belvedere House and Gardens where they have revamped the walled garden and have designed and develop the self-suffiency garden with Horticulture Tutor John Smyth.

“This is a realistic and practical programme that gives individuals the skills and knowledge into progressing onto further education and employment or self-employment. It gives learners the confidence to work towards their chosen career path within the Horticulture industry . It’s the partnerships coming together that make this a quality programme “Majella Maher Co-Ordinator”

On the day of the Presentation, We had the pleasure of Guest Speakers Cllr Michael Dollard (Cathaoirleacht of Westmeath County Council) who was very impressed with the Horticulture program and after completing  a tour of the Self Sufficiency Garden and other works carried out in Belvedere House and Gardens by the participants, he would have no hesitation in promoting this program as a progression for participants to  equip themselves with a Fetac Level 5 Certificate in Horticulture to enhance their chances of gaining employment  or  progressing to a Fetac Level 6 Certificate.

Guest Speakers also included Peter Egan (Fas Community Services Manager) who presented the Certificates on the day of Presentation, also John Brennan (Deputy CEO Westmeath Community Development) and John Smyth (Horticulture Tutor).

The next Programme is Starting 6th September 2010. places have been filled but if interested in future training please contact your local FAS office.
