New figures released in the first month of the year give insight into the make up of Irish volunteers and it seems that 70% of those registering to volunteer via their local Volunteer Centre are under 35 while 31% of volunteers are under 25. The figures released by Volunteer Centres Ireland (VCI) show that in Ireland more and more young people are contacting their local volunteer centre to get involved with their local communities.
The number one reason young people give for volunteering is that they want to ‘Give Something back’, followed by ‘gain or improve slills’. ‘Make a Difference’, ‘Free Time’ and ‘Want to Do Something for my Community’ also make the top 5 reasons young people are volunteering. While young people have mostly altruistic motivations to volunteer many of them are using volunteering to keep active and upskill during the downturn in the economy.

By planting a tree you can help to reduce Ireland’s carbon emissions. Trees take in carbon dioxide from the air and convert much of it into wood. They also produce oxygen. Every year, each hectare of Ireland’s forests takes in 3.4 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere, which helps in the battle against climate change. Trees also provide habitats for birds, insects and some small mammals. |

The National Spring Clean, Ireland’s largest anti-litter initiative, is urging people from Westmeath to help to revive their community spirit this spring by volunteering some time. The campaign, which runs throughout the month of April, is fully reliant on volunteers and free clean-up kits will be issued to those registering a clean-up.
The initiative plays a vital role in improving quality of life by empowering people to take responsibility for, and have pride in, their local areas. It is encouraging to have large community groups like the FAI on board. The initiative is totally reliant on people’s willingness to give their time and energy to help to make a difference in their community and the results continue to be outstanding.”
