catwalkCalling all Cool Cats for the Athlone Cat Walk

Ever wanted to be on the Cat Walk??? Well now is your chance!! Athlone Animal Welfare are organising a “Cat Walk” and you don’t even have to be a super model!!!

We are planning a sponsored walk from the Dublin Road in Athlone to Monksland and back into the town on the afternoon of the 15th May 2010.

We are asking people to dress in black and Trish will be on hand to paint cat faces on anyone who wants their face painted (feel free to wear cat ears or a tail!!) Don’t worry you the face painting is not obligatory but having fun is!!

We are asking people to take sponsor ship cards and if possible to aim to get ten people to sponsor €5. But even if you don’t make that amount it doesn’t matter, every cent counts!! Twenty euro can worm and de-flee a cat. Even a euro can buy a tin of food!!

GreenShootsNew figures released in the first month of the year give insight into the make up of Irish volunteers and it seems that 70% of those registering to volunteer via their local Volunteer Centre are under 35 while 31% of volunteers are under 25. The figures released by Volunteer Centres Ireland (VCI) show that in Ireland more and more young people are contacting their local volunteer centre to get involved with their local communities.

The number one reason young people give for volunteering is that they want to ‘Give Something back’, followed by ‘gain or improve slills’. ‘Make a Difference’, ‘Free Time’ and ‘Want to Do Something for my Community’ also make the top 5 reasons young people are volunteering. While young people have mostly altruistic motivations to volunteer many of them are using volunteering to keep active and upskill during the downturn in the economy.
